Usually the dates are declared only 2–4 months prior to the examination. After the declaration, only about one month is usually given to submit the application form.

The IBR department of every state usually functions under the Department of Labour of that state and a separate page is often assigned on the Labour Department website for the concerned state.

Very few departments update their sites regularly. Therefore, to know the examination-related information for a particular state, one has to directly contact the respective Boiler Department.

As per the notification by the Government of India, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, all states conducting BOE and Boiler Attendant certificate examinations are expected to follow the rules mentioned under “The Boiler Operation Engineer’s Rules, 2011”.

26. Form of application: Every application for examination shall be in Form A. The applicant shall fill in the required parts, sign the form in the presence of a Gazetted Officer, Magistrate or employer, and forward the application to the Secretary along with testimonials, certificate of age, proof of fee payment and photographs as specified.

36. Fees for Examination: Candidate for examination for Certificate of Proficiency as a Boiler Operation Engineer shall pay a fee of Rs. 1500/- or such fee/payment mode as notified by the Government.

A candidate can apply to appear for BOE from another state only if the state in which the candidate is working is not conducting the examination that year. The candidate has to obtain NOC from the IBR Department of the working state. Such NOC is generally valid only for that year.

No such limitation is applicable for BOE Certificate examination. A candidate can attempt as many times as required, provided the candidate is working in boiler operation at that time and satisfies the applicable conditions.

The certificate can be valid in another state after endorsement from the concerned state.

24. Endorsement on a Certificate: A person holding a Certificate of Proficiency as a Boiler Operation Engineer granted by a Board of any other State or Union Territory shall, on application, have the certificate endorsed for validity in the State or Union Territory in which services are applied for. Such endorsement shall be made by the Chairman of the Board.

25. Fee: A fee of Rs. 200/- shall be paid for endorsement on the certificate, subject to the notified payment process.

As per the present rule, Electronics & Communication Engineering is not directly included, while Instrumentation Engineering is included. Since both syllabi may have some overlap, some State IBR departments may allow such candidates at their own discretion if the experience criterion is favourably met.

If a candidate is working through a third-party organisation on a boiler owned by another company, the experience certificate may need to be issued or confirmed by the boiler owner under whose name the boiler is registered.

M.Sc. Chemistry is not included in the normal eligibility list. However, candidates may approach the concerned State IBR Department. Some State IBR departments may allow candidates at their discretion if they find the candidate suitable and the experience criterion is properly met.

The programme is conducted online. There may be a provision for direct classroom training or workshop depending on the batch structure, but it is generally optional and programme-specific.

Assessment, certificates and interaction format may vary based on the programme design for a particular batch.

The course duration may vary from batch to batch. Starting dates and batch-specific timelines are normally declared on the website or communicated separately to enrolled candidates.

The maximum access period does not necessarily mean that the candidate must take that full duration to complete the course. How quickly a candidate completes the course depends on the candidate’s pace and examination urgency.

In case of an early examination date, candidates should give prior intimation so that special attention may be provided where possible.
